We talk so much about IQ (intelligence quotient) and how its so important. IQ scores today are used for educational placements and to evaluate job applicants etc. Similarly, there is EQ, meaning Emotional Quotient and SQ, meaning Social Quotient, etc. However, I discovered that the most “quotient” we need today is the DQ, or what I call Dependence quotient. The poem that follows talks about the perils of a struggling Christian, trying everything himself/herself and failing miserably, only to realize that unless we can fully (I really mean ‘Fully’) depend on Jesus, we will continue to go in circles!
You asked me, “Walk in My commands”,
You said, “I’ll give you all the help”!
And yet I doubted You for it
And hired for the work myself
I put more trust in carnal flesh
To do the work of Holy-kind
Took every word for granted when
You promised all Your help is mine
I mocked You when I took the step
Instead of waiting in the line
I doubted when the silence crept
Thinking You left me too behind
What courage must one have for this
To overthrow the words of weight
And think of self as good enough
For Holy calling and high state
The promises You made so clear
That of my own there’s nothing much
Still off my back I dropped the cross
And carried on, self trust was such
At every point I wondered why
Not seeing Who I’d left behind
That help didn’t come when I looked up
Why Jesus was not by my side
How could He be, when I left Him
To stay behind while self was charge
The gentleman that He has been
He waited till I looked behind
I ran to Him and found Him there
Where I had left Him in despair
He smiled and said, “Come pick the cross”
Together we’ll go and soon get there!
The formula was making sense
That in Him there was life complete
In every sense I needed Him
Not just when trouble seemed to seep
I needed Him to die for me
And also live through every- day
The life that of my own I can’t
Unless He always paved the way
He was the secret to success
And yet just Him I left behind
But in His grace He waited there
For I am His and he is mine
He’s teaching me this every-day
How holding hands will help me now
That steps of self will only fail
He told me then, now shows me how!
